Testing yourself is producing information, so you learn a lot from it. First you learn something in a less powerful way by, for example, reading it. Next you try to remember the fact by thinking about it constructively, for example by thinking of something specific to do with it, or by connecting it with knowledge that you already have. Next you test yourself. It is very important here that you are able to reproduce the fact. If you can, then you will receive a powerful learning effect. The more difficult it is to reproduce the fact, the stronger the learning effect will be. Therefore, it is important not to keep testing yourself on the same fact repeatedly. It is also important not to wait too long before testing yourself on new facts. If you no longer remember the fact at all, the learning effect is almost zero and you basically start again from the beginning.

You read an interesting article in the newspaper or watch a good film. Afterwards you can easily remember it for at least a week. This is because you have actively thought about it and because you had a clear picture of the information. If you can combine something with your existing knowledge you will be able to store it well in your memory. If you need to remember something and can think: ‘just like…’ that will usually work. In addition, people are very good at remembering pictures. If you picture something, or visualize it, then you will be able to remember it well. If you have seen a house once and looked at it carefully, you will later be able to think back and remember exactly how it looked. This is without having to try very hard.

Learning vocabulary falls into the category of learning boring things. However interesting another language might be, the individual words are usually not. It is therefore difficult to think of an interesting and emotional image for every word. The solution is to test yourself on them in a structured way. This method always works.

After every paragraph, look away for a moment and decide what the most important message in that paragraph was. Do the same with every page/ larger piece of text. In this way you can test yourself on what is in the text and remember the contents. Again, if you want to keep the contents in your long-term memory then you will need to test yourself again. First after one day, then after three days, after a week, two weeks, after a month, etc.
